CBSE 2025 at Cambridge
The 16th Conference on Baltic Studies in Europe (CBSE)
“Converging Paths: The Baltic Between East and West“
24-26 April 2025, University of Cambridge, UK
The 16th Conference on Baltic Studies in Europe (CBSE) will be held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, and organised by the Baltic Programme at the Centre for Geopolitics, University of Cambridge, on 24-26 April, 2025.
CBSE 2025 in Cambridge will build upon the long and successful tradition of AABS and CBSE – two of the biggest Baltic studies conferences in the world, known for their inclusive approach and multi-disciplinary focus. This will be the first CBSE conference to be held outside the wider Baltic region, defined as the littoral of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Sweden.
Today’s geopolitical turbulence compels us to situate the Baltic region in the global context and consider it as a locus of converging paths between different cultures and civilisations. The Baltic has also been an area of considerable importance to the United Kingdom. From the 16th century onwards, the Baltic region has benefited from trade and security cooperation with Britain.
The central organizing principles of CBSE 2025 in Cambridge are that we need to learn from history, to engage both academics and practitioners, to focus on relations of the wider Baltic region with both East and West, and to approach research themes in a wide range of policy contexts. CBSE 2025 will be about understanding, educating, connecting and shaping – the four key goals that we advance at the Baltic Programme in Cambridge University.
In line with these aims, we invite applicants to present their work in a wide range of disciplines and subject areas, including:
- Anthropology, Sociology, and Religion
- Communication, Media, and Journalism
- Digital Humanities, Museums, and Libraries
- Environment, Resources, and Sustainability
- Migration and Diasporas
- Higher Education, Science Policy, and Knowledge Management
- History, Memory, and Identity
- International Law, Economics, and Political Science
- International Relations and Security Studies
- Literature, Arts, and Culture Studies
- Language Studies, Education, and Psychology
- Social Development and Urban Planning
