Congratulations to Jokubas Salyga, recipient of the 2023–2024 Research Grant for Emerging Scholars

The Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies is pleased to announce that Jokubas Salyga has been awarded the 2023-2024 Research Grant for Emerging Scholars.

The research grants of up to $6,000 support early-career scholars in any field of the Baltic studies. Proposals are evaluated according to the scholarly potential of the applicant and the quality and scholarly importance of the proposed work, especially to the development of Baltic Studies. Funds may be used for travel, duplication, materials, equipment, or other needs as specified.

The 2023 applications were evaluated by the AABS 2023-2024 Grants and Awards Committee consisting of AABS VP for Professional Development Dr. Kaarel Piirimäe, AABS President Dr. Dovilė Budrytė, and AABS Director-at-Large Dr. Daunis Auers. You can find a full list of 2023 awardees here.

Jokubas Salyga is Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The primary focus of his research is located in the broad area of historical sociology and political economy of capitalist development in East-Central Europe. Salyga is particularly interested in post-communist transformations in the Baltic states, forms of resistance against the neoliberal restructuring of East-Central Europe and the Former Soviet Union. His articles have appeared in the Economic and Labour Relations Review, Journal of Baltic Studies, Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe, Global Political Economy and elsewhere.

 

 

Project Overview

The prestigious AABS Research Grant for Emerging Scholars will allow me to conduct an additional round of fieldwork for my forthcoming book on the political economy of Baltic post-communist transformations. I intend to use the funds to travel to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, undertake archival research, and interview trade union representatives and labor activists.
